Career Advice from the Nomad Search Partners Team
Ask most people what a “liability consultant” does and you’ll get a shrug. Ask someone who’s spent a decade negotiating asbestos or environmental claims with insurance carriers, and you’ll get a very different reaction — because it’s one of the few corners of insurance and risk management that was built for remote work long before remote work was normal.
Complex liability consulting — sometimes called long-tail claims or mass tort consulting — deals with claims that take years or decades to resolve: asbestos exposure, environmental contamination, toxic tort, and similar cases where the original insurance policy might be older than the consultant handling it. A lot of the job is genuinely detective work. It’s called “insurance archaeology” for a reason: tracking down decades-old policies, mapping coverage across a company’s history, and building the case for what a carrier actually owes.
The rest of the job is negotiation. Once the coverage picture is clear, a consultant is the one drafting coverage position letters, managing notice and tender processes, and sitting across the table — often a virtual one — from adjusters to negotiate recoveries and loss allocations on a client’s behalf. None of that requires being in a specific office. It requires deep insurance knowledge, sharp writing, and the credibility to hold your ground in a negotiation.
That combination is why this tends to be a strong second act for people coming out of insurer claims departments, law firms, or insurance archaeology firms who want to keep doing high-stakes, well-compensated work without going back to daily office life. It rewards experience far more than it rewards physical location.
We’re currently helping fill a remote Complex Liability Consultant role for a leading complex liability and mass tort consulting practice. It calls for 5–10+ years of experience evaluating or negotiating coverage on multi-year claims, at an insurer, law firm, or insurance archaeology firm, plus a bachelor’s degree. If that’s your background, send your resume to complexliability@nomadjobs.careers.
